Taking Flight & Breaking Barriers
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) women only make up 20% of the aviation workforce. The aviation field has lacked inclusion and diversity, but High Aiming Women In Aviation aims high to change that. The industry needs more women to pursue aviation to bring new perspectives, skills, and experience. This leads to innovation, creativity, and equal opportunities focused on empowering everyone to pursue their dreams. By educating young women about the limitless possibilities of aviation, we can create paths for our future pilots, airport operators, and aircraft and system maintenance experts.
Featured in the image is our current Miss America 2024, 2nd Lieutenant Maddison Marsh. She is an active duty United States Air Force pilot, and the first ever active duty military member to be Miss America. It was until about fifteen years ago when the military allowed women to become pilots, which is the most selective and rigorous position in the military. 2nd Lieutenant Marsh has undefied boundaries, and continues to break stereotypes for women aviators, demonstrating that the sky is not the limit.
Recruitment
Within the aviation field, young women from the ages 0-18 face boundaries such as gender stereotypes, confidence gaps, lack of parental or guidance awareness, and the biggest boundary facing these young women are a lack of role models in toys, cartoons, and media. To change this its important to provide young women with educational services, funded outreach programs, and a sisterhood of young women all who share the passion for aviation.
High Aiming Women In Aviation recruits young women through educational and engaging presentations in local middle schools, and by attending aviation events to showcase the growing community of young women. These presentations also provide information to young women of scholarship and flight opportunities within our local community of South Jersey.
A subsidiary program of High Aiming Women In Aviation is, 'Flying Fridays.' Flying Fridays is a flight program, and new lessons are posted every Friday across multiple platforms, reaching hundreds of people. It teaches the basic principles of aviation, how to pilot a plane, and what to expect during flights. It also covers scholarship opportunities, and local chapters of young aviators. If you are interested in these lessons, click the tab 'Flying Fridays' to see more, or follow any of my social media platforms.
Retention
The culture of aviation has centered around gender roles, which limits female aviators advancements in the field and can impact their career at every stage. A culture change within the field requires a change in leadership to reflect the inclusivity the aviation community strives to achieve. The recognition of women aviators achievements, and advancements give a sense of belong for these women in aviation, thus creating a high retention rate.
Rise
Women in leadership roles within the aviation community become the role model and an aspiring figure for young women have a passion to pursue aviation. These women lead to the creation of more roles for future aviators, overall creating a more inclusive and diverse aviation industry.
